The opening statement of Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians is, in its entirety, a glorious celebration of the grace by which God is reaching us in Christ Jesus. While our desire is to be all God would have us to be, it is becoming very clear that we cannot accomplish His works by our own efforts. Too many things arise in us that are greater than we can overcome by our own religious strength. But, we find hope in the wonderful words in this next verse. Here we have Paul speaking of Christ Jesus in Whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace—Ephesians 1:7.
One of the greatest needs in the life of anyone of us is getting the matter of sins settled. Sins contaminate our whole being. They bring us to the place of being not desirable or useful for the purposes of God’s Kingdom. And yet, we cannot effectively deal with them by our own self-effort. We find in the above verse three phrases that describe what can deal with the sins that try to rule us. First is the redemption through His blood. It is His blood that cleanses us. Second is the forgiveness of sins. He, the all-powerful God of the universe, releases us from the guilt of our sins. Third, it is all according to the riches of His grace. The word riches means bountiful store. There is absolutely no end to the grace that is available for our full salvation. It offers full deliverance from all kinds of sin. Hallelujah!
DEAR FATHER, what grace you showed me when You received me in Christ Jesus! Thank you—oh thank You!—for all you have done in me already. Please continue your dealing with me. Let nothing remain that grieves Your Spirit, or that hinders me from usefulness in Your Kingdom. With my heart, I believe You are bringing me, pure and holy, into Your Kingdom—all because of Your grace.
